For research chemistry, andarine S-4 belongs to a class of compounds called SARMS or selective androgen receptor modulators. Like typical androgens, SARMs also bind to androgen receptors for selective anabolic activity. One of certain androgen receptors and not others, hence their name.
In contrast to testosterone and other anabolic steroids and hormones, S-4 has the advantage that they do not have androgenic activity in non-skeletal muscle tissue.
The non-steroidal androgen antagonist bicalutamide was used as the lead compound in the treatment of muscle wasting diseases, osteoporosis and benign prostatic hypertrophy with S4.
As an orally active partial agonist of the androgen receptor, S-4 not only maintains lean body mass (LBM), but also effectively but actually increases it.
